TUFLOW FV
Available since version: 2026.2.0
ERROR 10081 - Culvert upstream invert is less than ground elevation, ID <culvert_id>
Alternate Message(s)
WARNING 10081 - Culvert upstream invert is less than ground elevation, ID <culvert_id>

Description

TUFLOW FV checks each culvert’s invert elevations against the bed elevation of the mesh cells in the culvert’s upstream connection (nodestring or zone) during model initialisation. This message is raised when the upstream invert elevation is lower than the minimum bed elevation in those cells, meaning the culvert opening sits below the ground surface as represented in the mesh.

The severity is controlled by the Culvert Invert Check == command. It is raised as an error by default and can be downgraded to a warning by setting Culvert Invert Check == WARNING.

Suggestions

Check the upstream invert elevation specified for the culvert in the culvert definition file and compare it against the bed elevation of the mesh at the upstream connection. The invert elevation should be at or above the ground surface as defined by the mesh bathymetry.

If the discrepancy is small and physically reasonable (for example, where the mesh resolution means bed elevations are coarser than the culvert geometry), set Culvert Invert Check == WARNING in the control file to allow the simulation to proceed with a warning rather than an error.
